SME’s
make up approximately 99% of the UK’s business community* and account
for nearly 50% of all employment and business turnover.
[*Government definition of SME
is a company with less than 250 employees]
This sector has traditionally been left behind in terms of affordable,
regular and expert support. The typical business environment is becoming
increasingly bureaucratic with more and more day-to-day issues affecting
longer term strategy and growth. For example, there have been more than
50 new laws governing employment of people throughout the 1990’s
but 2003 has seen a 20% increase in employment tribunals. This, along
with the Health & Safety Executive clampdown on employer responsibility
for staff stress and well being represent just one aspect of the increasingly
difficult playing field of independent business.
This leads to an increased requirement for help from an easily accessible
source.
All of UQ’s divisions can help with
different aspects of supporting a business.
