A recent survey by Computer Weekly magazine found that the number of SME’s with dedicated IT departments is on the decrease. However, the number of companies that have a formal IT strategy has risen and this appears to be a result of more owner/managing directors being involved in IT. This is great news since it ensures that IT is not just a stand alone support function but can be an integral part of business aims and objectives.

This means that the emphasis is on knowing exactly what IT will accomplish for the business. With owners/managing directors being more responsive it is imperative that the company’s technology representative is able to communicate their viewpoint clearly because it will be understood and adhered to.

With legislation increasingly affecting SME’s (e.g. Data Protection, Disability act for web sites), more evaluation should be conducted by the owner/managing director. There is also an effect here on IT security with sensitive information being available if proper restrictions are not applied backed up with associated business processes.

Much disillusionment has arisen in the past with money being spent on IT with little measurable benefit to the business. It is for this reason that deployment of a step-by-step, all encompassing IT strategy is important.
